Shinsen-en, Japanese garden in Nakagyō-ku, Japan

Shinsen-en features a central water garden with a pond, stone bridge, and vermillion bridge leading to a small island containing a Dragon Queen shrine.

Established in 794 as an imperial garden covering 33 acres, the site became a Buddhist temple of the Shingon school following reconstruction in 1607.

The garden hosted imperial ceremonies, including a ritual in 863 where 66 pikes representing Japanese regions were erected to ward off a citywide plague.

Located south of Nijō Castle in central Kyoto, this historic site maintains its original layout centered around the Hojuju-ike pond with three Shinto shrines.

The garden's name influences Oike Dori street designation, which translates to 'Honorable Pond' street, marking its historical significance in Kyoto's landscape.
