Kyoto City Heiankyo Sosei-Kan Museum, History museum in Nakagyo-ku, Japan
Kyoto City Heiankyo Sosei-Kan Museum is a history museum in Nakagyō-ku dedicated to the ancient Heian capital. Its centerpiece is a 1:1000 scale model of the city measuring 7.8 by 6.6 meters, showing how Kyoto was laid out during the Heian era.
The museum stands on the former site of a Sake Brewery Office warehouse from the Heian period. The original pillar foundation marks are preserved in tiles, serving as a reminder of the location's long history.
The museum displays replicas of national treasures, including the Kitano Tenjin Engi scroll, which explains religious practices from the Heian era. These pieces help visitors understand the spiritual traditions that shaped daily life at that time.
The museum is located on the first floor of Kyoto Asny Center and welcomes visitors daily except Tuesdays. Multilingual information is available on site to help you navigate your visit.
Visitors can examine archaeological artifacts and view detailed reconstruction models of imperial buildings. A special experience is trying on traditional Heian period noble costumes to get a feel for how the ancient aristocracy dressed.
