Jizo-in, Buddhist temple in Kita-ku, Japan
Jizo-in is a Buddhist temple located in the Kita-ku district of northern Kyoto. The grounds include several traditional wooden buildings with tiled roofs, linked by stone paths and surrounded by planted areas.
Jizo-in was founded during the medieval period, when Buddhism was expanding across Kyoto and new temple complexes were being established in the northern part of the city. The site has since remained a place of worship in the same district.
Jizo-in is dedicated to Jizo, a bodhisattva figure closely tied to the protection of children and travelers in Japanese faith. Small stone statues wearing red bibs stand in different spots across the grounds, placed there by worshippers as offerings.
The temple can be visited on foot and is best explored during the morning when the grounds are quieter. Bring comfortable shoes, as the paths and outdoor areas require walking across uneven stone surfaces.
The temple grounds contain a small moss garden that has taken centuries to develop its current form. Many visitors walk past it without stopping, yet it is one of the oldest elements on the site.
