Yonago Waterbirds Sanctuary, Bird sanctuary in Yonago, Japan.
Yonago Waterbirds Sanctuary is a 28-hectare wetland reserve beside Nakaumi Lake with viewing points, walking paths, and a nature center featuring large windows facing the water. The layout allows visitors to observe birds at different locations throughout the property.
In the 1960s, agricultural development threatened to alter Nakaumi Lake's environment, but local residents prevented these changes. The sanctuary was officially created in 1995 to protect the area.
The center serves as a gathering space where visitors can watch birds moving through their natural habitat and learn how local people have valued and protected these wetlands. The way the building is positioned shows how much care has gone into letting people observe without disturbing the birds.
The site sits roughly 20 minutes from Yonago Kitaro Airport and 15 minutes from JR Yonago Station, making it easy to reach from both transport hubs. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended, and dress for seasonal weather conditions.
From October to March, around 1,000 tundra swans arrive for their winter stay, joining more than 200 other bird species including greater white-fronted geese and white-tailed eagles. This seasonal influx makes these months the peak time for bird watchers.
