紀之國大橋, Engineering bridge in Sakaiminato, Japan
The Kii no Kuni Bridge is a rigid steel frame structure spanning roughly 1.7 kilometers across Lake Nakaumi, connecting Sakaiminato in Tottori Prefecture and Eshima in Shimane Prefecture. The design uses a network of diagonal supports and cross-braces to carry vehicle traffic across the water.
The bridge opened in 2004, replacing an older drawbridge that restricted vehicle weight to about 14 tons. This new structure allowed larger and heavier vehicles to cross between the two regions.
The bridge connects two regions and is used daily by local residents traveling between Tottori and Shimane for work and daily activities. It has become an integral part of how people move through this landscape.
The structure is accessible on foot or by bicycle from Sakaiminato and has wide pathways for pedestrians to cross. The gradients are relatively moderate and allow most people to make the crossing without significant difficulty.
The bridge has different gradients on each side and creates an optical illusion from certain viewing angles that makes it appear steeper than it actually is. This characteristic makes it particularly striking for photographs.
