Nyakutakuji, Former Buddhist temple in Matsumoto, Japan

Nyakutakuji is a former Buddhist temple in Matsumoto that features rows of Buddha statues, with several positioned near the entrance and others scattered across the graveyard grounds. The site includes multiple religious structures and stands adjacent to a Shinto shrine.

The temple was founded during the Nara period through the efforts of Buddhist priest Gyoki and received land grants from the local feudal lord to support its operations. This established a Buddhist presence in the Matsumoto area.

The temple holds carved statues representing Buddhist saints, followers, and deities throughout its grounds and display cases. Some of these figures are covered in gold leaf, creating a quiet space for prayer and reflection.

The site is located a short walk from Matsumoto Station, making it easy to reach on foot. The grounds are open and straightforward to explore, with clear pathways connecting the various structures.

An ancient Japanese cedar tree called Shinobu-sugi grows on the grounds and is believed locally to hear and grant wishes of couples seeking marriage blessings. This particular tree draws visitors who come to honor this folk tradition.
