Matsumoto, Core city in Nagano Prefecture, Japan
Matsumoto is a core city in Nagano Prefecture, Japan, situated within a mountain basin. The city spreads along several river valleys, surrounded by peaks of the Japan Alps to the west and gentler hills to the east.
The settlement originated during the Heian period as an administrative center. Under Edo rule, it grew into a major castle town serving as the seat of Matsumoto Domain.
The city takes its name from the pine forests that once covered the surrounding slopes. Local craft markets and traditional miso breweries showcase techniques passed down through generations.
Direct train connections from Tokyo and Nagoya bring travelers to the city, complemented by a regional airport. Most attractions lie within walking distance in the center, while buses run to more distant temples and viewpoints.
The city center sits more than 590 meters (1,935 feet) above sea level, resulting in clear air and cooler temperatures. Small canals fed by spring water run through several neighborhoods, once used for firefighting purposes.
