Lake Suwa Fireworks Festival

Every August 15th, Lake Suwa hosts 40,000 fireworks launched from platforms placed directly on the water surface, attracting 500,000 spectators annually.

The festival began in 1949 as a symbol of hope and recovery during Japan's post-World War II reconstruction period, evolving into a major national celebration.

Japanese pyrotechnicians demonstrate their technical expertise through intricate patterns and formations, following centuries-old traditions of firework craftsmanship.

Visitors can reach the festival via a 35-minute train ride from Matsumoto to Kamisuwa Station, with tickets costing 580 yen per person.

The surrounding mountains create natural amplification for the fireworks' sounds, while the lake's surface mirrors each explosion in perfect symmetry.
