Hatsushima

Hatsushima is an artificial island in Lake Suwa featuring manicured gardens, open green spaces, and paved walking paths throughout its grounds. The island contains rest areas and viewpoints positioned to take advantage of the surrounding water and distant mountain views.

The island was constructed in 1954 as part of a local effort to develop tourism in the Suwa region and create a new recreational destination. This project reflected the broader push to make the area more appealing to visitors.

Local fishermen prepare fresh catches at waterfront restaurants, maintaining traditional fishing methods passed down through generations in Lake Suwa.

Ferry services operate from the Lake Suwa shoreline multiple times daily to reach the island. The pathways and facilities on the grounds are straightforward to navigate without special requirements.

The island features an elevated observation deck that offers views of Mount Fuji across the lake's water on clear days. This sight is one reason many people make the trip to the location.
