Suwa Garasunosato Museum, Art museum in Suwa, Japan
Suwa Garasunosato Museum is a glass art museum in Suwa, Nagano Prefecture, housing a very large collection of glass objects spread across several exhibition halls. The displays mix permanent installations with rotating shows, and the building also includes workshop spaces open to visitors.
The museum opened in 2012, drawing on a glassmaking tradition that had grown in the Nagano region over several decades. It was set up to document and give visibility to the work of regional glass artists and their techniques.
The museum showcases glass art from the area around Lake Suwa, where glassmaking has been a living craft for decades. In the workshop spaces, visitors can watch artisans shaping and blowing glass in real time.
The building is easy to enter and move through, with the different halls laid out in a logical order. It is worth setting aside a good amount of time, as walking quickly through all the sections gives little chance to take in the full collection.
The museum holds one of the largest crystal balls in the world, displayed so that visitors can see it up close. The building itself stands out for its triangular roof, a shape that sets it apart from most other museum structures in Japan.
