茨住吉神社

茨住吉神社, Shinto shrine in Japan

Ibaragi Sumiyoshi Shrine is a Shinto sanctuary located in Nishi Ward, Osaka, situated in a quiet area near busy shopping streets. The grounds feature multiple structures including a main shrine hall and a separate shrine dedicated to the goddess Ichikishimahime.

The shrine was founded in the early Edo period to protect the agricultural development of the area. The land was once swampy terrain that transformed into farmland and eventually developed into a vibrant neighborhood.

The shrine is deeply rooted in the Kujo neighborhood and serves as a gathering place for the community. Local residents visit during New Year, at festivals, and for personal prayers, maintaining traditions that have passed through generations.

The shrine is easily reached on foot from Kujo Station and is open from early morning until late afternoon. It makes sense to visit during quiet periods away from New Year and festival celebrations when the grounds are less crowded.

An ancient shrine tree estimated at 600 to 700 years old stands on the grounds and is revered by the community as a sacred location where a snake once lived. The shrine's name may derive from wild thorny brush that once covered the area before the land was developed.
