Sugadaira Highlands

Sugadaira Highlands is a plateau situated between 1300 and 1500 meters elevation, bordered by the peaks of Mount Azumaya and Mount Neko. The terrain features a mix of open grasslands, sports fields, and training facilities spread across the high ground.

The highlands were discovered as a training ground for rugby in the early 20th century and gradually developed into a dedicated sports center. The natural conditions made it suitable for year-round athletic training.

The highlands draw athletes from rugby, soccer, and tennis who come here to train throughout the year. You can see teams practicing on the fields and courts across all seasons.

The main route is via Hokuriku Shinkansen to Ueda Station, then a 50-minute bus ride through mountainous terrain to reach the highlands. The road becomes winding at higher elevations, so allow extra travel time.

Winter temperatures drop below minus 10 degrees Celsius in January, creating conditions resembling the Swiss Alps. These cold conditions have made the plateau a preferred spot for intense winter training.
