Saifukuji, Buddhist temple in Tsuruga, Japan
Saifukuji is a Buddhist temple in Tsuruga, Japan, known above all for the works of artist and craftsman Uncho Ishikawa. Wood carvings, paintings, and mosaic work cover both the interior and exterior surfaces of the buildings across the grounds.
The temple was founded in 1534 and took on its current appearance over the following centuries through the work of local craftsmen. The pieces inside have been recognized as important cultural assets by Fukui Prefecture.
The Kaisando Hall has a carved ceiling with openwork panels and colored details that are rarely seen in other temples of the region. Walking slowly through the room, visitors can notice how wood carving, painting, and gilding come together in one continuous surface.
The temple is open to visitors during the day, and hours may vary slightly with the season. The grounds have different surfaces and steps, so flat, sturdy shoes are a good choice.
The floor of the main hall is covered with wood mosaic patterns created by Uncho Ishikawa in a personal style that differs from his wall and ceiling work. Most visitors look upward and only notice this detail at their feet on a second look.
