Nakaikemi Wetland

Nakaikemi Wetland is a protected wetland area near Tsuruga covering about 87 hectares, with boardwalks guiding visitors through the landscape. The water and soil support thousands of animal and plant species that form a complex living system.

The area was once rice paddy fields during the Edo period before being converted into a protected zone. This shift marked the transition from agricultural use to environmental preservation.

The sediment layers below the surface record nearly 100,000 years of climate shifts and vegetation patterns. This record allows scientists to understand how the environment changed over long periods.
