Akatsuka Castle, Medieval castle ruins in Itabashi, Japan
Located on a terrace overlooking the Arakawa River, Akatsuka Castle features remaining defensive structures including moats, earthen walls, and stone markers.
Built in 1456 by Chiba Yoritane, the castle served as a stronghold for the Musashi-Chiba clan until its abandonment in 1590 following the Odawara Campaign.
The castle grounds, now part of Akatsuka Park, contain numerous preserved fortification elements, making it the most intact medieval castle site within Tokyo's 23 wards.
Visitors can reach the castle ruins by taking a 15-minute walk from Nishi-Takashimadaira Station on the Toei Mita Line or an 18-minute walk from Narimasu Station.
The castle controlled both land and water transportation routes, monitoring the Arakawa River crossing point and the Kamakura Road connecting northern and southern Musashi Province.
