Itabashi Art Museum, Art museum in Akatsuka, Tokyo, Japan
The Itabashi Art Museum is an art museum in the Akatsuka neighborhood of Tokyo that hosts rotating exhibitions of Japanese art inside a modern building. It stands directly next to Akatsuka Park, which surrounds the building with trees and open green space.
The museum opened in 1979, making it one of the first modern art institutions in the northern part of Tokyo. Its founding gave the art scene in that area a new place to take root.
The museum focuses on artists connected to Itabashi Ward and shows their works from different periods of Japanese art. Visitors can discover how the artistic life of this part of Tokyo developed over time.
The museum is about a 14-minute walk from Nishi-Takashimadaira Station, and signage along the way is easy to follow. Since exhibitions change regularly, it is worth checking what is currently on display before making the trip.
The museum does not have a permanent collection on display: every work shown is part of a temporary exhibition that will eventually be replaced. This means no two visits are ever the same, no matter how often someone returns.
