Akatsuka Botanical Garden, Botanical garden in Itabashi, Japan.
Akatsuka Botanical Garden is a botanical garden in Itabashi featuring around 600 plant species spread across multiple sections. The grounds include a Main Garden, an Agricultural Garden, and specialized areas dedicated to medicinal plants.
The garden was established in October 1981 and preserves natural terrain alongside traditional Japanese landscaping approaches. It was created as a green space in Itabashi during a period when the city was developing residential areas.
The Manyo Yakuyo Garden section displays plants mentioned in the Man'yoshu, Japan's 8th-century poetry anthology, with information boards next to the ancient verses. You can see which plants the poets of that era knew and valued.
The garden is open daily except Mondays and certain Tuesdays each month, so check ahead to avoid disappointment. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended as you will move between the different planted areas.
The grounds showcase three distinct environments: a tree sample collection, displays of medicinal herbs, and areas demonstrating seasonal crops. This variety lets visitors explore different gardening approaches in one location.
