Shōgetsu-in, Buddhist temple in Akatsuka, Japan.
Shōgetsu-in is a Buddhist temple with a main hall, traditional gates, and several outbuildings arranged throughout the grounds. A large pond with wooden bridges defines the layout and is home to colorful carp that swim beneath the surface.
The temple was founded in 1492 by Chiba Yoritane during the Muromachi period and represents five centuries of Buddhist practice in Tokyo. Its establishment occurred during a time of great cultural flowering in Japan that also produced other significant temples and artworks.
The temple follows Soto Zen traditions with regular meditation sessions and ceremonies that shape daily life at the site. The architecture and gardens display classical Japanese Buddhist design principles that visitors can experience directly.
The temple sits a short walk from Nishi-Takashimadaira station and opens daily to visitors. Flat terrain and wide pathways make exploring the buildings and gardens straightforward for most visitors.
At the temple's amulet shop, visitors can purchase special food to feed the numerous carp in the central pond. This hands-on experience allows guests to interact directly with the creatures that inhabit the water.
