Senkyōkan, Han school and museum in Honchō, Japan

Senkyōkan is a restored Edo-period school building that now serves as a museum showcasing the history of Japanese education. The structure houses teaching materials, historical documents, and artifacts that illustrate how learning and instruction took place during that era.

The school was founded in 1799 and operated as a private educational institution throughout the Edo period, serving the local community. Its transformation into a museum began in 2006 to preserve this chapter of Japanese educational history.

The school's role in training local leaders and scholars is evident through its teaching spaces and learning materials on display. Visitors can see how education shaped the community during this period.

The site is compact and can be viewed in about an hour, with guided tours available to enhance understanding. Wear comfortable shoes since the building has traditional features including uneven flooring and steps between rooms.

The building still retains its original wooden architecture and room layout, allowing visitors to experience how classes actually took place in that setting. This authentic environment is rarer than in many similar institutions.
