Miyako Castle

Miyako Castle is a medieval castle site in Miyakonojō featuring stone foundations and earthwork fortifications built on a hilltop. The structure displays the defensive design typical of southern Kyushu's military architecture from that era.

Hongō Yoshihisa built this fortification in 1375 to control the surrounding territories during Japan's feudal period. It served as a defensive strongpoint in the southern Kyushu region during that time.

The castle's layout reveals how medieval Japanese lords thought about defense and control of land. Walking the grounds shows you the logic behind where walls and barriers were placed to watch over the territory.

The castle grounds sit on a hilltop and are accessible on foot, but you should be ready for uneven terrain and steps. On-site information is minimal, so it helps to read about the site beforehand.

This site lacks the central tower found in many other Japanese castles and instead preserves its original hilltop fort layout. This makes it unusual compared to other medieval Japanese fortifications.
