Mount Takachiho, Stratovolcano in Kirishima-Yaku National Park, Japan.

Mount Takachiho is a stratovolcano that rises to 1,573 meters with steep sides descending into a wide crater. The Ohachi Crater spans about 500 meters across and drops about 200 meters deep.

The volcano was active over many centuries and shaped the entire Kirishima mountain range through repeated eruptions in the region. This geological activity fundamentally formed the landscape.

The mountain holds significance in Japanese mythology as the place where a heavenly deity descended and left a sacred mark. This belief has made the location meaningful to people across generations.

The hiking trail from Takachihogawara Visitor Center stretches about 5.5 kilometers to the summit and takes roughly three and a half hours. Sturdy footwear and plenty of water are important since the path is steep and conditions at the top can be quite windy.

The volcanic summit offers views of Miike Crater Lake and the nearby Mount Sakurajima, which actively steams in the distance. Meanwhile, volcanic gases continue to emerge from the Ohachi Crater beneath your feet, creating the sensation of standing on a living mountain.
