Shiratori Yama, Active volcano in Ebino, Japan.
Shiratori Yama is an active volcano in the Kirishima mountain range at 1363 meters elevation. A circular trail connects three mountain lakes: Byakushi-ike, Rokkannonmi-ike, and Fudo-ike.
The Kirishima volcanic system, which includes this mountain, shaped the regional landscape through numerous eruptions spanning tens of thousands of years. This volcanic activity continues to define the area's current geology and terrain.
The mountain attracts hikers who come to observe the seasonal changes in Japanese red pine forests and alpine plants throughout the year. People use the trails here to experience how the vegetation transforms with each season.
The summit is reachable from the Ebino Plateau parking area in about one hour, making it suitable for a morning hike. The route can be easily combined with an ascent of the nearby Karakuni-dake.
Scientific monitoring networks track the complex magma systems beneath this part of the Kirishima volcanic group. These ongoing measurements help researchers understand volcanic processes that remain active today.
