Nagaragawa Estuary Barrage, Flood control barrier in Gifu Prefecture, Japan
The Nagaragawa Estuary Barrage spans 661 meters across the Nagara River, featuring ten adjustable gates that regulate water flow and prevent saltwater intrusion.
Construction of the barrage began in 1988 and concluded in 1995, with a total cost of 150 billion yen after three decades of planning and debates.
The Aqua Plaza Nagara information center presents exhibits about the river's heritage and the barrage's operations through interactive displays and multimedia presentations.
The facility includes fish ladders on both banks, allowing various species such as sweetfish and crabs to navigate between upstream and downstream sections.
Before this barrage's construction, the Nagara River remained the last major waterway on Honshu island without a dam on its main stream.
