Moroto garden

Moroto garden is a house estate in Kuwana combining Japanese and Western architectural elements across expansive grounds. The property features multiple buildings with distinct style features, including water features and designed landscapes.

The estate took shape in the late Edo period and was designed by a noted Western architect who rarely worked outside Japan's eastern regions. This project represented his only significant work far from his usual locations.

The garden blends Japanese rooms and Western structures that both show signs of lived-in spaces. Visitors notice how these two design traditions exist side by side throughout the grounds.

Visitors should allow time to explore both building areas since the grounds feature pathways and different levels. Good footwear helps, especially when walking through the landscaped garden sections.

A window with eight sides breaks through one wall, creating an unexpected design detail from the Edo period. This room served for tea preparation and was designed by a recognized craft master.
