揖斐・長良川橋梁, Railway bridge in Gifu, Japan
The Ibi-Nagaragawa Bridge is a railway bridge near Gifu that carries two sets of tracks across two separate rivers. Each crossing uses different structural systems, with the upper line supported by steel trusses and plate girders to handle the varying conditions of each river crossing.
The original structure with cast iron piers built in 1887 suffered severe damage during the 1891 Nobi earthquake. Reconstruction afterward introduced brick oval caissons for the foundation, a more stable design that could better withstand seismic activity.
The bridge appears in the animated film "A Silent Voice" as a meaningful location where characters encounter each other during important moments in their lives. Visitors who know the film often visit to see the real structure that inspired those scenes.
The bridge is best viewed during daylight hours when the structural details are clearly visible from the riverbanks nearby. Visitors can approach from multiple angles along the river paths to see both the overall form and specific construction features.
The bridge crosses two rivers at the same time, spanning both in one continuous structure rather than building separate crossings. This simultaneous double crossing required engineers to adapt each section to different water flow patterns and river conditions.
