Nagao-ji

Nagao-ji, Buddhist temple on the Shikoku Henro pilgrimage in Sanuki, Japan

Nagao-ji is a Buddhist temple in Sanuki with several buildings spread across its grounds. The main compound includes a principal hall positioned between the Daishido Hall on one side and the Gomado Hall on the other, along with additional structures like the Sanmon Gate and a Sutra Tower.

The temple was founded in 739 when the monk Gyoki carved a statue from a willow tree after receiving a divine message at this location. This establishment marked the beginning of the site as an important religious center in the region.

The temple hosts the Daieyo Fuku Ubai event where participants receive wooden tags and participate in traditional ceremonies throughout the year.

The grounds are easy to explore and offer several areas to visit throughout your time there. The various buildings and structures are connected by pathways, allowing you to move between them comfortably during your visit.

The temple keeps a strand of hair from Shizuka Gozen, the companion of Minamoto no Yoshitsune, who lived here as a nun after her early life at court. This relic offers a personal connection to the place and its layers of historical significance.
