Ichijōji Sagarimatsu, Pine tree in Sakyō-ku, Japan
Ichijōji Sagarimatsu is a pine tree located on the grounds of Hachidai Shrine in Kyoto, marked by a stone monument. The shrine preserves the trunk of the original tree, which marks this historical location.
In the early 1600s, this was the site of a famous confrontation between swordsman Miyamoto Musashi and the Yoshioka family. This encounter led to the decline of the Yoshioka school and became a significant moment in martial arts history.
The name reflects the legendary confrontation that took place here and remains part of local memory. Visitors can see a bronze statue of Musashi holding his dual swords, which symbolizes the historical meeting.
The site is easily reached by public transportation, with Ichijōji Station nearby on the metro line. A visit works best on quieter days when you can enjoy the historical setting without crowds.
Many visitors don't realize this is actually the fourth tree at this location, as the original pines had to be replaced over the centuries. Yet both new and old trees connect the continuity of this symbolic place.
