川西市郷土館, Heritage museum in Kawanishi, Japan
Kawanishi City Museum houses two registered cultural properties: the former Hiraga residence with English country house architecture and the former Hirayasu residence featuring traditional Japanese design. Both buildings showcase different residential styles from different eras.
The museum was founded in 1988 within the former Hirayasu residence, which belonged to a copper refining family, and expanded in 1990 to include the relocated Hiraga house. This development documents the preservation of architecturally significant residential buildings.
The Muze l'Espoir section displays works by local painters, while the Hirayasu residence features a collection of chopsticks and mining artifacts that reflect the region's craft traditions.
The museum is located about 15 minutes on foot from Yamashita Station and is easy to reach by walking. Visitors should check opening hours in advance and allow sufficient time to explore both residences thoroughly.
The Hiraga residence showcases Taisho-period English architectural features including study rooms, parlors, and sunrooms, representing rare examples of Western influence on Japanese residential design. This blend of Western style and Japanese context is seldom seen today.
