Daikoku Bridge, Steel portal frame bridge in Chūō-ku, Japan
Daikoku Bridge is a steel portal frame bridge that crosses the Dotonbori River in Osaka. It accommodates both vehicle traffic and foot traffic, serving as a functional crossing between the neighborhoods on either side of the water.
A bridge has stood at this location since 1615, initially made of wood before undergoing several reconstructions over the centuries. The modern steel structure represents the latest evolution of a crossing that has adapted to changing city needs.
The bridge name changed from Namba Bridge to Daikoku Bridge in 1703, deriving from its connection to the Kizu Daikoku Shrine pathway.
The bridge provides a straightforward crossing over the river with separate paths for vehicles and foot traffic. It is easily accessible from both sides and functions as a main traffic route in this part of the city.
During the 1854 Ansei Nankai earthquake, the bridge blocked the Dotonbori River when tsunami waves struck, causing substantial flooding in the area.
