Lake Nojiri Naumanni Museum, Fossil museum near Lake Nojiri, Shinano, Japan

The Lake Nojiri Naumanni Museum exhibits a collection of 85,000 fossils and artifacts discovered in the surrounding lake area of Nagano Prefecture.

The museum opened in 1984 following the 1948 discovery of elephant fossils by Matsunosuke Kato, leading to extensive excavations starting in 1962.

The institution preserves remnants of ancient human settlements, including stone tools and hunting implements used by early inhabitants 40,000 years ago.

Located near Kurohime Station, the museum opens daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, offering interactive fossil digging activities for children.

The facility displays complete skeletal reconstructions of Naumann elephants and Irish elk, based on fossils extracted from Lake Nojiri's sediments.
