Iizuna Highlands, Tableland at 1000 meters elevation in Nagano Prefecture, Japan
Iizuna Highlands is a broad plateau located at approximately 1000 meters elevation near Mount Iizuna in Nagano Prefecture. The terrain consists of open grassland areas with views extending toward Nagano city and the surrounding mountain ranges.
The area gained international attention in 1998 when nearby Iizuna Resort hosted freestyle skiing competitions for the Winter Olympics. This event brought worldwide recognition to the region and its winter sports facilities.
The name Iizuna relates to mountain worship traditions practiced by Shugendo ascetics who once used these heights for spiritual training. Today visitors come to experience the open landscape and understand how the terrain shaped local religious practices.
The area is crossed by several hiking trails and ski runs, with multiple routes for different skill levels. Expect variable weather conditions at this elevation and bring clothing suited to rapid temperature changes.
During winter months, the elevated location creates temperature inversions that place visitors literally above the clouds settling in the Nagano Basin below. This natural phenomenon produces the striking impression of standing on an island between earth and sky.
