Katsurayama Castle, Hill castle in Nagano, Japan
The castle stands at an elevation of 812 meters with a system of defensive rib moats and earthen ramparts across the mountainous terrain.
Uesugi Kenshin constructed this fortress in 1555 to counter Takeda Shingen's military expansion into northern Shinano province through strategic positioning.
The castle's location influenced local yamabushi warrior monks, who divided their allegiances between the Uesugi and Takeda clans during regional conflicts.
Visitors can reach the castle ruins by taking a train to Zenkoji-shita Station on the Nagano Line, followed by a mountain path hike.
The castle features a particular defensive structure called unejō-horikiri, consisting of multiple successive rib moats carved into the mountain slopes.
