Ishigaki City Yaeyama Museum

The Yaeyama Museum holds over 5,000 exhibits including traditional boats, canoes, textiles, and agricultural tools from the Yaeyama Islands region.

In 2011, the museum received artifacts from ancient human remains discovered during airport construction, which carbon dating determined to be 24,000 years old.

The museum exhibits document the transformation of local traditions through collections of festival masks, traditional architecture models, and historical scrolls.

Located at 4-1 Tonoshiro, the museum welcomes visitors from 9 AM to 5 PM with an entrance fee of 200 yen, closing on Mondays.

The facility maintains a collection of historical coffin palanquins, which represent specific funeral traditions of the Yaeyama archipelago.
