Sengen Shrine

Sengen Shrine, Shinto shrine in Japan

Sengen Shrine is a Shinto sanctuary located in Koyama on grounds featuring ancient cedar and ginkgo trees protected as natural monuments. The site includes a small museum with rotating exhibits that tell stories about the history of Mount Fuji worship and local religious traditions.

The shrine was established as a starting point for mountain climbers and served as a center of belief in mountain deities. During a period of religious transformation in the 19th century, Buddhist statues were removed from the mountain, but the community now works to preserve them.

The shrine represents a center of Mount Fuji worship that has shaped local spiritual practices for centuries. Visitors today can observe how this place continues to connect people with the mountain and its religious meaning.

The shrine is located at Murayama in Fujinomiya City and provides parking for visitors. The information center operates only on weekends and holidays, with knowledgeable guides available to answer questions about the site's history.

The Murayama Old Trail adjacent to the shrine is believed to be one of the oldest hiking paths on Mount Fuji and remains in use by pilgrims and climbers today. This historic route allows visitors to walk the same path that early worshippers once traveled.
