Waseda Aizu Museum, University museum at Nishi-Waseda, Japan

Description

The Waseda Aizu Museum is a university institution in Nishi-Waseda housing more than 50,000 objects from multiple collections. The holdings include Japanese ceramics, calligraphy pieces, and archaeological materials displayed within a reinforced concrete building.

History

The building was completed in 1925 as the university library and ranks among the earliest reinforced concrete structures on campus. Its conversion into a museum later allowed the collections to be made accessible to the public.

Culture

The museum holds the Yaichi Aizu Collection, which was built through research travels and represents the personal tastes of an early 20th century scholar. Walking through the galleries, you notice how these objects reveal what intellectuals valued and studied during that era.

Practical

The museum sits about a five-minute walk from Waseda Station and offers free entry to all visitors. Opening hours run from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with closures on Wednesdays and during New Year holidays.

Did you know?

The building's roof displays distinctive polygonal curves that set it apart from other structures of the same period. This architectural feature led to its recognition as a cultural heritage site.
