Shin-Hase-dera

Shin-Hase-dera, Buddhist temple in Sakyō-ku, Japan.

Shin-Hase-dera is a Buddhist temple nestled among hills featuring traditional Japanese wooden structures and multiple buildings spread across the grounds. The site displays typical architectural elements of such religious centers with spaces designed for worship and contemplation.

The temple was founded in the year 900 by Fujiwara no Yamakage, marking the beginning of its role in the region's Buddhist development. This establishment connects the site to more than a millennium of religious practice.

This temple belongs to a network of 33 Kannon temples spread throughout Kyoto and Osaka, where practices of the Buzan sect of Shingon Buddhism remain active. Visitors notice how these traditions shape the daily rituals and the way the grounds are maintained.

The grounds are accessible by marked paths with multiple stops for exploration and viewing daily religious activities. Visitors should wear respectful clothing and be prepared to follow traditional practices such as removing shoes in certain areas.

The temple houses religious objects and artifacts representing different phases of Buddhist influence in Japan across more than a thousand years. This collection tells the story of how religious traditions changed and developed at this specific location.
