Ryōkō-in, Buddhist sub-temple at Konkaikōmyō-ji in Sakyō-ku, Japan
Ryōkō-in is a smaller temple within the Konkaikōmyō-ji complex in Kyoto, featuring traditional wooden structures and carefully designed gardens with stone pathways. The space includes meditation halls and a burial ground that anchor its spiritual purpose within the larger temple grounds.
The temple was founded in 1605 by Takigawa Katsutoshi as a memorial following a personal loss in his family. It later developed into an important site for Buddhist memorial services and burials within the larger temple grounds.
Among all sub-temples at Konkaikōmyō-ji, Ryōkō-in maintains the sole graveyard, reflecting its role in Buddhist memorial traditions.
The temple is accessible by public transportation with stations nearby offering good connections to other areas. Visitors should wear appropriate footwear since the grounds include unpaved paths through gardens and can be uneven.
This is the only burial ground within the entire Konkaikōmyō-ji complex, making it distinct from other sections of the site. The grounds hold graves of notable historical figures who were significant to the region.
