Okazaki Park, Urban park in Sakyō-ku, Japan
Okazaki Park is an urban park in Sakyō-ku, Kyoto, laid out along the Lake Biwa Canal corridor, with walking paths, open lawns, tennis courts, and cycling routes. The grounds are flat and open, bordered on different sides by museums, a shrine, and a zoo.
The park was established in 1904, when Kyoto was undergoing rapid modernization following the completion of the Lake Biwa Canal. The area around the canal quickly developed into one of the city's first planned public leisure zones.
The park sits next to the Heian Shrine and draws locals who use it for walks, picnics, and seasonal gatherings. On weekends, families tend to cluster around the ponds and open lawns, giving the area a relaxed neighbourhood feel.
The park is easy to reach by subway or bus and sits within walking distance of several other sights in the area. Because the paths are flat and well laid out, visitors can move comfortably through the grounds before or after exploring the surrounding neighbourhood.
The canal running through the park was not built as a landscape feature but as an industrial waterway drawing water from a lake roughly 46 miles (74 km) away. Today, flat-bottomed boats carry visitors along this same channel, making a working waterway into a slow and pleasant ride.
