Kyoto Prefectural Library, Prefectural library in Okazaki Park, Kyoto, Japan.
The Kyoto Prefectural Library is a public library in Okazaki Park, in the Sakyō-ku district of Kyoto, Japan. Its collections cover books, journals, newspapers, and historical documents, organized across several sections within the building.
The library opened in 1873 under the name Shushoin Library and became a prefectural institution in 1898. The current building was completed after reconstruction work in the early 2000s.
The library sits within Okazaki Park, an area that groups museums, a zoo, and event venues, so visitors often combine several stops in one outing. Inside, old Japanese manuscripts and scrolls are available for consultation, making it a place where written tradition remains directly accessible.
The library is in Okazaki Park and easy to reach by bus, with stops close to the entrance. The park is large, so allow a few extra minutes to walk if you are coming from one of the nearby venues.
This library was among the first in Japan founded on a Western public library model, which was unusual for its time. The ground floor has an open lounge where talks and events for the general public take place on a regular basis.
