Rohm Theatre Kyoto, Concert hall in Okazaki Park, Kyoto, Japan.
Rohm Theatre Kyoto is a concert hall in Okazaki Park, Kyoto. The complex comprises three performance spaces: a main hall with 2005 seats, a south hall with 716 seats, and a smaller north hall for 200 guests.
Kunio Maekawa designed the original Kyoto Kaikan, which opened in 1960. After a complete renovation it reopened in 2016 under its new name.
The building carries the name of an electronics company yet its musical identity remains intact. The Kyoto City Symphony Orchestra rehearses here regularly and visitors can choose between contemporary concerts and classical Japanese theatre forms such as Bunraku puppetry.
The building stands at 13 Okazakisaishoji-cho and is easily reached from Higashiyama Station on the Tozai subway line. Several bus routes also stop nearby, connecting the venue with central Kyoto.
The company ROHM funded the renovation with approximately 5.25 billion yen and received the naming rights in return. This arrangement between a semiconductor manufacturer and a municipal cultural institution remains rather uncommon in Japan.
