Shinshōgokuraku-ji, Buddhist temple in Sakyo-ku, Kyoto, Japan

Shinshōgokuraku-ji is a place of worship in Sakyō-ku built around a courtyard surrounded by traditional wooden structures. A three-story pagoda stands beside the main gate, while the Ganzandaishi Hall and bell tower hold recognition as cultural properties of Kyoto Prefecture.

Ennin built a hall in 984 to house an Amida Buddha figure carved from sacred wood, founding the site. Over the following centuries, the complex underwent several renewals that maintained its role as a center of religious devotion.

Locals refer to the site by the name Shinran-san and visit to pray before the Amida Buddha figure that rests inside the main hall. Worshippers light incense and leave offerings on small altars arranged near the entrance, continuing practices passed down through generations.

The main courtyard and outer grounds open between 9 and 16 without charge, but entry to treasures and garden areas requires a fee. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes since pathways include uneven surfaces and a few steps leading between different levels.

Once a year on November 15, the principal statue opens for public viewing, drawing believers and curious visitors alike. People gather before the main hall on that day to witness the rare appearance of the revered figure.
