吉祥寺, Buddhist temple in Ōtsuchi, Japan
Kichijoji is a Buddhist temple in Ōtsuchi featuring a Sanmon gate built in 1802 and a Kyozo storage building dating to 1804. The main hall was reconstructed in concrete after World War II, while some of the original wooden structures remain on the grounds.
Founded in 1458, the temple grew into an educational center during the Edo period. This role as a learning institution eventually led to the establishment of Komazawa University.
The temple cemetery holds graves of Daimyo families from the Edo period, showing how feudal lords honored their dead. Walking through the grounds, you can observe traditional burial practices and the respect given to these historical figures.
The temple has designated areas for sutra storage and traditional ceremonies, with separate spaces for meditation and religious training. Visitors should be aware that some areas may be restricted during active ceremonies or private events.
Only the Sanmon gate and Kyozo building survived World War II destruction among the original wooden structures. These two early 19th-century buildings stand as reminders of what endured through wartime damage.
