Todogasaki Lighthouse

Todogasaki Lighthouse is a white tower standing at the easternmost point of Japan's main island. The structure sits on a rocky headland and houses an original lens system that has guided ships for generations.

The beacon was built in 1902 and equipped with a Fresnel lens system designed for maritime navigation. This equipment represented advanced technology for guiding vessels during that era.

The name Todogasaki comes from the rocky cape where the light stands watching over the sea. Sailors and fishermen have relied on this beacon for more than a century to navigate these waters safely.

The path from Aneyoshi fishing port to the lighthouse follows natural terrain and takes about an hour and a half to walk. Wear sturdy shoes and bring water, as the coastal route can be exposed to wind and weather.

The lens system inside is an original from the construction period and represents one of the few Fresnel mechanisms still working in East Asia. Most visitors do not realize that these optical components continue to generate the light that guides ships today.
