Miyako, Administrative division in Iwate Prefecture, Japan.
Miyako is a city on the northeastern coast of Honshu, stretching along roughly 40 kilometers of shoreline between the Pacific Ocean and forested mountain ranges inland. The urban area includes several former municipalities and combines coastal neighborhoods with smaller settlements in the hills.
The city was formed in 2005 by merging several independent municipalities, including Miyako, Taro, and Yamada. This fusion aimed to streamline governance in the sparsely populated coastal region.
Traditional fishing rituals along the bay reflect centuries of life by the sea, with local shrines blessing the safety of fishermen. These practices remain alive in the daily routine of coastal communities and shape the rhythm of everyday life.
Exploring is easiest by JR railway or local buses that connect the center with coastal villages. Winter months bring snow to the mountains, while the shore remains accessible year-round.
After the 2011 earthquake, massive concrete walls were built along the coast, some towering over 12 meters high. These structures now dominate the view from the sea and fundamentally alter the relationship residents have with the water.
