龍泉洞

Ryusendo is a limestone cave system in Iwaizumi that extends approximately 4 kilometers underground. About 700 meters of illuminated passages are open to visitors, passing through chambers and around subterranean lakes throughout the system.

The cave received designation as a National Monument in 1938 due to its geological importance and resident bat populations. This recognition led to scientific research and exploration that highlighted its natural significance.

The water from this cave serves as drinking water for Iwaizumi residents and is used in local sake production at the nearby Sengkin Brewery. This connection shows how the cave remains part of daily life in the community.

The passage through the cave is straightforward, descending about 270 steps during guided tours that take you through the main sections. The lighting is good throughout, and there is a science museum on-site for additional learning about the geological formations.

Three underground lakes within this system contain exceptionally clear water that reveals the geological processes at work. The deepest lake reaches depths that are unusual for an inland cave waterway.
