Akkadō, Show cave in Iwaizumi, Japan.

Akkadō is a limestone cave system in the Iwaizumi area with multiple underground chambers connected by passages. The network features pointed rock formations hanging from ceilings, stone columns rising from floors, and a large underground lake within its depths.

Scientists began systematic exploration of the cave in the 1950s, documenting its chamber structure and underground features. Recognition as a protected natural site in the 1980s led to conservation efforts and opening for public visits.

Visitors walk through the cave network to observe the mineral formations and underground ecology shaped by flowing water. The route reveals how this place has become part of local geological identity and research.

Visitors should wear sturdy shoes with good grip, as the pathways inside can be slippery and uneven in places. The temperature remains cool throughout the year, so bringing a light jacket or sweater is advisable regardless of the season.

The cave harbors an underground lake system that extends for several kilometers and contains rare blind fish and other specialized creatures adapted to darkness. This hidden aquatic world exists in complete darkness and reveals a completely different habitat from the surface.
