Iwaizumi

Iwaizumi is a town in the Kitakami Mountains of northeastern Iwate Prefecture with a small stretch of Pacific coastline. It consists of several settlements and residential areas spread across the mountainous terrain.

The area was originally part of Mutsu Province under Nambu clan control during the Edo period. It gained formal town status in 1922.

The town sits in a region shaped by traditional craftsmanship and rural living practices. People here maintain deep connections to nature and local customs that remain visible in everyday life.

The terrain is mountainous and remote, so a car is necessary to explore the region thoroughly. Local schools and community services are spread across several small centers.

The area contains the Akkadō and Ryūsendō cave systems, spectacular natural cave formations nearby. These caverns form an unexpected geological attraction within the forested mountains.
