Kitayamazaki

Kitayamazaki is a coastal cliff formation stretching along the Pacific Ocean in northern Iwate Prefecture. The cliffs rise sharply from the water and display layered rock formations created by different geological processes.

The cliffs formed over millions of years through volcanic activity and were shaped into their current form by ocean erosion. They earned the highest national rating for geological significance, recognizing their importance to Japan's landscape.

Local fishermen continue to work the waters using traditional boats, and they guide visitors through sea caves and rock formations along the coast. This practice keeps maritime traditions alive as part of daily life here.

Multiple observation points are positioned along the coast to view the cliffs from different angles. The first platform can be reached easily from the parking area and offers wheelchair access.

The rock formations display striking colors created by mineral deposits within the stone, showing patterns of red and brown throughout. These colorations result from natural minerals that have accumulated over time.
