Kitayamazaki, Coastal cliff in Tanohata, Japan

Kitayamazaki features a sequence of 200-meter-high coastal cliffs extending for 8 kilometers along the Pacific Ocean in northern Iwate Prefecture.

The cliffs obtained the highest Special A rating from Japan Travel Bureau's National Tourism Resource Assessment, marking their national geological significance.

Local fishermen guide visitors through sea caves and rock formations in traditional Sappa boats, maintaining maritime traditions of the Sanriku Coast.

Three observation decks provide different viewpoints of the cliffs, with the first platform offering wheelchair accessibility from the parking area.

The cliffs display distinctive geological formations of andesite, dacite, and basalt rocks, colored by iron chloride and iron oxide deposits.
