Port of Miyako

The Port of Miyako sits at the mouth of the Hei River and functions as a major maritime hub on the eastern coast of Iwate Prefecture. The facility spans multiple piers and cargo areas positioned along the waterfront.

Operations began in 1615, establishing this location as a significant fishing center during the Edo period. The area became known for abundant catches of salmon and mackerel.

The port ties into local fishing traditions that remain visible through active docking areas and daily market activities at the waterfront. People here continue practices rooted in their maritime heritage.

Cruise ships dock at Fujiwara Pier in the industrial zone, and you will need transportation to reach the city center and main attractions. Walking to town takes around 30 minutes or a short bus ride.

All port facilities underwent complete reconstruction after the 2011 tsunami, making the area far more resilient than before. The new protective barriers are significantly higher and stronger than the original structures.
