Akao Herb & Rose Garden

Akao Herb & Rose Garden is a hillside garden in Atami containing thousands of rose plants spread across multiple themed sections that each highlight different botanical interests. The varied sections flow down the slope and include herb beds and other plantings, all overlooking the water beyond.

The garden was established in the late 1980s and designed by a landscape architect who arranged different plant types in a stepped sequence across the hillside. This plan united rose plantings, herbs, and other trees into a single coordinated design.

A small shrine sits at the top dedicated to the bonds that hold people together, where visitors receive red seals as symbols of these connections. This ritual transforms the garden into a place of personal meaning beyond its botanical displays.

The garden is easily reached by bus or train from the town center and remains open to visitors during regular daytime hours throughout the year. Entry is required at the gate, and exploring the various hillside sections at your own pace takes some time depending on your interest and stamina.

The grounds contain an exceptionally large ancient tree shaped as bonsai that stands out distinctly from the typical miniature bonsai seen elsewhere. This unusual specimen regularly draws attention from bonsai enthusiasts and those fascinated by unusual tree forms.
